Inner-City Gems

Where is this month going?! Well, in a way, it's going to the dogs... Ruby and I continue to go for our daily rides (her runs) along the community trails in my neighbourhood. Yesterday we ventured farther than we have before (a total of 5 kms) and made it all the way over to the trails that go through Idlewood park. Much to our surprise, while we were taking a little break to take in the fresh summer smells and drink some water, we had a police officer drive past on a motor bike. We all greeted each other and continued on our way. I remember thinking to myself that as much as I was surprised to see the officer on the trail, it was actually reassuring that these somewhat secluded trails are monitored to help make them safer for people who use them. It's too bad they don't appear to get more use than they do throughout the day. Ruby and I only passed one other cyclist while on the trials in Idlewood park, and with the fantastic wetland and boreal forest that surround you, it's an inner-city gem that ought to be enjoyed.

I've been on holidays this past week, so haven't had my commutes to and from work. I find that I am missing them, and look forward to my next commute on Tuesday. Since receiving the bike, I've noticed a definite change in my spirit - my overall mood has been uplifted; I look forward to the exercise in riding; and I cannot wait to get back on the bike day after day! There are still so many more trails and tucked-away sights left to explore right in my own neighbourhood! Hopefully my little posse (aka Karl and Ruby) will all be able to get down to the Grand and Walter Bean trail over the weekend. Oh!... and then there's a cave along the Grand between Blair and Galt that Karl just learned about too. I had no idea! It's one thing to hike these trails, but it's so much better to ride them! You can take in so much more in the time you have to explore - it's wonderful!

  1. Excellent to hear about your change in spirits Jade! Cycling is both liberating and uplifting. I was down by the Walter Bean trail yesterday and the day before. Some pictures are posted on the facebook page if you're interested. I took a few photos of a section between Cambridge and Blair Village. There's an organization called rare sites (www.raresites.org): a non-profit land reserve consisting of over 900 protected acres along the grand river. They have a number of landmarks along the trail too!
